Custom install destination so no admin rights needed
Hey, so I use the app at work. Requesting admin rights to have the app update is a pain. I have to request it from IT, cause it’s trying to update the app in an admin folder - “C:\Program Files\”
Here’s what I usually do when any app needs admin rights to update.
I will try to install the app on %appdata% instead.
If they don’t provide that option, I’m forced to disable app updates so I don’t have to request admin rights from IT to update the app.
If they don’t have an option to disable auto-updates, that’s fine. I’ll just continue using it while it tries to silently update but fails. Here’s the thing though - remnote ALWAYS requests for admin rights after I close the app to try to update it. It’s pretty annoying.
It’s starting to get on my nerves at this point, remnote is the only one so far that’s doing this to me. I copy the files from its default “C:\Program Files\” folder to %appdata% myself. It’s an electron app, I know it’ll work. And it does, but updating it still installs it in “C:\Program Files\” folder.
Son of a- that’s it the updater is blocked from my firewall.
Look at the 5 things I’m forced to do to use your desktop app. Up to step 2, for any app, that’s fine. But once I have to try the rest of the methods, it’s starting get to unuser-friendly territory. All this could be completely prevented by either:
During installation let me install it in a custom location.
Let me disable auto-updates.
